Quantum Simulation with Neutral Atoms – Experiment
Supervisors: Dr Tyler Neely and Prof. Halina Rubinsztein-Dunlop
Study in sunny subtropical Brisbane, Australia, within the new ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS – official website) at the University of Queensland – ranked in the top 100 institutions internationally. We have a vacancy for a promising domestic or international student for a new experimental project, utilizing ultracold atoms for quantum simulation.
By lowering the temperature of an ultracold gas of 87Rb and 41K atoms, a novel state of matter known as a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) is produced. These atoms will be then loaded into a configurable optical trap created through the rapid modulation of a tightly focused optical beam. With the ability to address and measure individual atoms in the optical trap, a toolbox for the simulation of magnetic spin systems will be realized. Immediate applications to the understanding of as-yet unexplained quantum magnetic phenomena, and unconventional superfluidity, are the direct goals of this research.
This experimental project will allow for the development of diverse and transferable skills, including electronic and optical design, experimental system design and implementation, software design, and data analysis. This project will also allow for attendance of related international workshops and conferences. There will also be the opportunity to interact with other projects within EQuS, as well as the theoretical quantum atom optics group at the University of Queensland
The remuneration for this position begins at $25,007 p.a. tax free, and indexed annually. A priority top-up scholarship of $5000 is available for exceptional candidates.

As part of the application process you are required to write a short statement in support of your application, which should address the following points:

• Why you are applying for the scholarship,
• How you will benefit from the opportunities that being given the award will provide, and
• How you would contribute to the University community during your studies here.

You may refer to activities, achievements and personal qualities which are particularly relevant to your application.
You should also include:

• A scanned transcript of your highest academic qualification,
• Evidence of English language competence e.g. a scanned copy of your IELTS certificate (where appropriate), and
• A scanned copy of your University offer letter (or email if you have not received your letter).

Applications must be complete. Applications which are incomplete, missing required data or are illegible will be considered invalid. You may only apply for an award once. Multiple applications will not be considered.
The School’s award panel will meet to consider eligible scholarship applications received by the respective due dates.
The School will assess all applications against the following criteria:

• Previous academic record and your suitability for postgraduate study in the School, i.e.
• Class of degree / CGPA / final score of first degree or previous masters-level study,
• Relevance of your first degree to the course you are applying for,
• Any prizes or awards given to you in your first degree.
• Relevant industrial or professional experience,
• Evidence of workplace experience that is relevant to the course you are applying for, and
• Personal achievements which indicate your ability and commitment to: complete the intended course; contribute to the course, school and wider university community during your studies and the professional community when you complete the course.

In the event that two applications are scored identically and only one award is available, the panel will award the scholarship to the first application received, using the date of receipt in the University as the relevant date.
Please note: All scholarship applicant should intend to complete to MSc stage. Any successful scholarship applicant that chooses to exit their course early will be expected to reimburse all or part of their award at the discretion of the School.
Notification and acceptance

• Successful applicants will be informed in the first instance by email
• Applicants will be required to respond by email to accept the offer. A formal scholarship offer letter will then be issued and dispatched by email. Failure to accept the offer will lead to the scholarship offer being withdrawn and offered to an alternative applicant.

Terms and conditions

• All scholarships are awarded in the form of a discount on fees paid.
• A scholarship will be withdrawn if:
• You fail to accept the offer within the time permitted.
• Your scholarship or University application is found to contain incomplete or inaccurate information.
• You are found to have committed academic misconduct once enrolled at the University
• You are found to have committed non-academic misconduct once enrolled at the University
• You fail to pass module assignments or end of module exams at the first attempt once enrolled on your course
• You defer or suspend your studies, withdraw from the University or are suspended or withdrawn from the University
• You fail to make payment for fees due to the University within 23 days of the due date
• In the event that a scholarship is withdrawn, you will need to pay the full fees due for your course

Appeals Process
All decisions on scholarship applications will be made by the School’s Scholarship Panel. All decisions are final and we cannot enter into correspondence with unsuccessful applicants. There are no grounds for appeal against an unsuccessful application with the following exception:

• Where there is evidence of alleged improper conduct or irregular procedure during the scholarship awards process.

If you wish to appeal on the above ground, you should write in the first instance to the Head of School, outlining your evidence of alleged improper conduct or irregular procedure during the awards process. The Head of School will respond to you within 20 working days.

Beasiswa Bagi Keluarga Guru Pengabdi yang Hilang

Jakarta, 10 April 2012–Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Ditjen Dikti, Kemdikbud) memberikan Beasiswa bagi keluarga korban Program Sarjana Mendidik di daerah Terluar, Terdepan dan Tertinggal ( SM-3T) yang hilang digulung ombak.

Hal tersebut diungkapkan Direktur Pendidik dan Tenaga Kependidikan Ditjen Dikti Supriadi Rustad dalam Konferensi Pers di Gedung C Komplek Kemdikbud. Hadir pula sebagai narasumber Staf Khusus Bidang Media Sukemi, Pembantu Rektor I Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) Zainal Rafli dan Koordinator program SM-3T UNJ. Kecelakaan ini terjadi saat SMAN 1 Amfoang Barat Daya dan guru SM-3T berekreasi di pantai Tanjung Mas, Amfoang Barat Daya di Kabupaten Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) pada Rabu siang, 4 April 2012. Ketiga korban tersebut adalah Rizki Susdiasto (guru dari UNJ), Heru (guru dari Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha) dan Mundhus (siswa kelas 2 IPA SMAN 1 Amfoang Barat Daya). Menurut Supriadi, secara moral Kemdikbud akan bertanggung jawab terhadap kelangsungan pendidikan keluarga korban.

Hal itu mengingat, selain terlibat dalam program yang digagas oleh Kemdikbud, para korban juga merupakan tumpuan harapan dari keluarga masing-masing. “Dikti akan memberikan beasiswa bagi satu anggota keluarga dari ketiga korban yang telah hilang tergulung ombak,” ujar Supriadi. Kakak dari korban Mundhus rencananya akan mendapat beasiswa S2 dari Ditjen Dikti untuk menjadi guru ataupun dosen. Sedangkan Keluarga Rizki dan Heru juga akan mendapatkan bantuan biaya pendidikan. Selain beasiswa, Kemdikbud juga tengah mengurus proses klaim asuransi. Klaim tersebut bisa dilakukan setelah kondisi korban dapat dipastikan. “Sebelum peserta SM-3T berangkat, mereka diberikan pelatihan ketahananmalangan selama dua minggu,” ujar Zainal. Ia menyayangkan musibah yang tidak dapat dihindarkan ini. Hingga saat ini, Mundhus telah ditemukan tewas. Sedangkan, kedua korban lainnya masih dalam pencarian.

Surat-Surat untuk Beasiswa Studi Lanjut

IKA ingin melamar ke satu program beasiswa, kelengkapan informasi adalah hal mutlak yang harus kita miliki. Setelah mengantongi semua informasi tentang beasiswa yang kita incar, maka langkah selanjutnya adalah menyiapkan semua berkas pendaftaran.
Persyaratan administrasi standar untuk melamar beasiswa adalah formulir pendaftaran yang sudah diisi, fotokopi ijazah dan transkrip nilai yang sudah dilegalisasi dan diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris, curriculum vitae (CV), pasfoto, dan fotokopi paspor. Selain dokumen tersebut, berikut adalah beberapa surat yang juga harus kita persiapkan ketika menyusun berkas lamaran beasiswa.
Surat rekomendasi
Kesaktian surat rekomendasi cukup berpengaruh dalam aplikasi beasiswa kita. Menurut salah satu anggota mailing list (milis) beasiswa, Ronald, surat rekomendasi yang ditulis di kertas berkepala surat (kop) universitas akan lebih berpengaruh bagi panitia seleksi.
“Posisi pemberi beasiswa juga termasuk hal yang penting, setidaknya ketua program studi/ketua jurusan; dan kalau bisa dekan fakultas. Lebih keren lagi kalau dapat surat rekomendasi dari rektor,” kata Ronald, seperti dinukil Okezone dari milis beasiswa Yahoo Groups,Kamis (23/8/2012).
Tetapi, Ronald mengimbuh, ada juga pemberi beasiswa yang mensyaratkan surat rekomendasi sesuai format yang mereka persiapkan di formulir tersendiri. Urusan surat rekomendasi ini gampang-gampang susah. Ronald menyebutnya “tricky”. Pasalnya, kata Ronald, kita harus mempersiapkan beberapa surat rekomendasi untuk beberapa perguruan tinggi dan program beasiswa yang berbeda.
“Untuk menyiasatinya, mintalah surat rekomendasi yang isinya umum, dengan kop surat universitas; dan minta beberapa buah,” sarannya.
Ronald juga punya trik lain, yakni memindai (scan) surat rekomendasi, kemudian mencetaknya berwarna untuk diserahkan dalam aplikasi beasiswa/universitas. “Jika pemberi beasiswa meminta surat yang asli, baru kita serahkan,” ujar Ronald.
Poin lain yang perlu diperhatikan ketika meminta surat rekomendasi adalah mencantumkan nomor telepon dan email profesor atau dosen yang memberi rekomendasi di surat rekomendasi tersebut.
Surat nominasi
Selain surat rekomendasi, beberapa beasiswa ada yang meminta surat nominasi. Surat ini dikeluarkan universitas yang dituju sebagai prasyarat mengajukan beasiswa. Dalam surat ini diterangkan kualitas unik/khusus pelamar dan program beasiswa yang dituju si pelamar.
“Kalau universitas yang dituju tidak memberikan surat nominasi ini, artinya si pelamar tidak bisa mendaftar ke beasiswa yang dia inginkan, dan dia harus mencari beasiswa yang lain,” tutur Ronald menerangkan.
Letter of Acceptance
Surat penerimaan (letter of acceptance) menjelaskan bahwa suatu perguruan tinggi telah menerima kita sebagai calon mahasiswa di kampus tersebut. Dalam beasiswa studi berbasis riset, letter of acceptance bisa juga diberikan oleh seorang profesor yang mau menerima kita di laboratorium yang dipimpinnya.
Sertifikat tes kemampuan
Para pelamar beasiswa wajib melampirkan sertifikat berbagai tes kemampuan, terutama kemampuan berbahasa asing. Misalnya, sertifikat kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang sering dipakai adalah Test Of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) atau International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Biasanya, syarat minimal skor TOEFL adalah 550 dan IELTS 6.5.
Selain bahasa Inggris, ada juga beasiswa yang mensyaratkan sertifikat kemampuan bahasa ibu di negara yang dituju, misalnya bahasa Jepang dan Jerman.
Tes kemampuan lainnya yang harus dipenuhi adalah Test Potensi Akademik
(TPA). Dalam versi internasional, TPA dikenal sebagai Graduate
Record Examinations (GRE) dan Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). GMAT biasanya digunakan sebagai bagian persyaratan mendaftar S-2 ke bidang bisnis.
Personal essay
Sebagai pelamar beasiswa, kita juga harus membuat sebuah esai yang bercerita tentang diri, studi S-1, dan motivasi kita melamar beasiswa tersebut.
Ronald menyarankan, esai ini harus menghubungkan latar belakang studi dan
pekerjaan saat ini dengan rencana studi S-2, karier, dan visi ke depan dari
pelamar. Menurutnya, esai ini menjadi salah satu faktor penentu. Bahkan, bisa dibilang lebih penting dari IPK.
“Kalau IPK, TOEFL dan nilai-nilai test yang lain bisa dibilang tidak akan banyak berubah, maka esai ini selalu bisa direvisi berkali-kali. Jadi, alokasikanlah waktu yang banyak untuk esai ini dan mintalah ke teman yang jago bahasa Inggris untuk proof read esai kita,” tuturnya menyarankan. (rfa).
